The Iliad Epic, Part 1: Thetis's Marriage

 

Thetis's marriage poses a great concern for Zeus. Just as Zeus had put an end to his father Kronos's rule, a god born of Thetis would bring an end to Zeus's reign. Therefore, Zeus opposes Thetis's marriage and always seeks to prevent it. However, Thetis, unable to marry, is very unhappy. Zeus seeks a solution to Thetis's unhappiness and finds it this way: instead of marrying Thetis to an immortal god, he decides to wed her to a mortal man. The search begins for a mortal husband for Thetis. But who will it be? The answer to this question comes as Centaur  Chiron, with the body of a horse, recommends Peleus, the King of Phthia, as the mortal husband, under his care. Zeus accepts this idea, and a wedding is organized with the participation of all immortals. However, the mischievous and troublemaking goddess Iris is not invited to the wedding. The ceremony takes place on Mount Pelion. The Muses sing magnificent songs on the wedding night, and all gods and goddesses present their gifts. During the gift presentation, the uninvited goddess of discord, Iris, secretly throws a gift into the midst of the wedding. This gift is a golden apple taken from the Hesperides' garden, with the inscription "to the fairest."
